The Night of the Mermaids

The Night of the Mermaids

Hélène Kérillis

from René Magritte
Art-Fiction

In a dreamlike world, the encounter between two amazingly different beings, a siren and a Two-Legs

A river at night time. The little girl Jane is unhappy. So she runs away from her boarding school and walks along the river bank. At the same time, a group of mermaids begins its migration to the sea. They fear only one thing: meeting a Two-Legs. Then Jane slips into the black waters and the unlikely encounter does take place.

Mainly inspired by the famous painting The Empire of Light by Magritte, this children’s book has been written to accompany the eponymous exhibition, from September 19th 2013 to January 13th 2014, at the Magritte Museum in Brussels.

Every detail of the canvas plays a role in the story with a modern graphic layout by the TroisFoisPlus designer studio.

Art-Fiction series

Fiction as a path to art and beauty / From 6 years up
Children approach life essentially through their emotions and fiction is a privileged way to help them understand the world and build their own character. This is how the Art Fiction series leads the reader along a story which develops using details in the paintings. At the end of the book, a documented double-page brings answers to the reader's questions.
